Lackey's writing style is subtle, nuanced and understated. Combined with her economical, to-the-bone sense of pace, we end up with stories that are powerful in their simplicity. In spite of the imagination and originality on display, many of the stories in One Revolution have a traditional, almost mythical feeling.In this collection, Lackey shows us a year's worth of flash fiction and short stories. Her strength in extremely short works lies in her mastery of showing just enough to get a sense of a much larger world, and in her striking economy with words.
The way Lackey makes the extraordinary seem ordinary underlines the colourful weirdness of the worlds she writes. It's a further confirmation of her talent that even in such alien settings, with the reader thoroughly on the other side of the glass wall, her characters still manage to stay relateable and human.
I began to read the stories in order, intending as I usually do to read the entire collection in a sitting, but found such concentrated doses didn't go down well in one continuous glut. Each piece is too small and dense for that - what many other authors take pages to say, Lackey conveys in a handful of powerful, concise, expertly-forged sentences, so taken all at once I didn't really have time to process one story before I was reading another one. This book is best enjoyed one or two stories at a time, in between other reading, and so I recommend the ebook version purely on logistical grounds.
My two favourite stories in this collection were "A Happy Valentine's Day" and "Everyone's a Winner." Both show us a glimpse of everyday life for unusual people, and both hint at vast power being used for small, simple, everyday goodness. And they manage to do it in about three pages each.
This collection, taken slowly, will make many days a little brighter.

Jamie Lackey's One Revolution is the perfect book for when you need a vacation but only have five to ten minutes to get away. Each story - whether adorable or a little bit dark - will whisk you away with magic and the unexpected. Purely imaginative and thought provoking - you'll find yourself daydreaming of these stories long after you've read them. This book is a must for every cozy corner, coffee table, & bedside stand as you'll find yourself reaching for it time and time again.
One Revolution A Year of Flash Fiction is anthology with twenty flash fiction shorts, twelve flash or short-length chapters to the author's Martian Adventure series, and the short story entitled, Journal of an Artist. That's thirty-three short stories in about 102 pages.
My favorite section of the anthology was the twenty individual short stories that started the book. Each one was a complete story, usually in under two pages. They are the perfect length for a quick read before bed or on the bus. Even though one author produced all of the writing in this anthology, it contains an admirable level of variety. From delightfully sweet to truly twisted, these short stories span the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. Stand outs among the titles were May Flowers, A Diamond in the Sky, Top of the Game, and Taking Root.
The Martian Adventures is a series of short stories about two children living and growing on a Martian outpost. It's a delightful series with a writing style that is deceptively simple next to the larger (and universal) life issues covered thematically. And the characters are just so darn likable!
Finally, the short story, Journal of an Artist, is a dystopia story about a future where artists must be bred. Through the format of journal entries, we get a very personal story of the loneliness in living such a "privileged" life.
I highly recommend this anthology. The author is a gifted story-teller and there is likely to be something in One Revolution for everyone's taste.
This is a great collection of stories. I have enjoyed every one of them, and the nice thing is, they are great for a quick pick up and read when you only have a short period of time to read. I will warn you, once you get started, it can be hard to put down, like a potato chip, you cant stop at just one. Check it out and enjoy it!
Jamie Lackey's One Revolution is full of amazing imagery. The stories are short enough that you can read one while you drink your morning cup of coffee and turn it into a mini escape into magical places. The range of her stories in this book is fantastic; some of them are a little dark and some of them are up-lifting. No two stories in this collection will make you feel the same way while reading them. Jamie Lackey is a true artist and this collection shows that beautifully! I highly recommend this book.
I have followed Jamie's work in other collections and have always been very impressed, but I was completely blown away by One Revolution. This collection is by far one of the better short story collections I've ever read, and also probably the shortest. It doesn't quite seem possible that such short stories could have the power to terrify or to make you misty-eyed, which several of her entries do in equal measure, but Jamie Lackey manages to do in two to three pages what many authors take chapters to do. My personal favorite was the positively Lovecraftian entry "Feeding the Master", and "May Flowers" was so quietly touching I finished it with tears in my eyes.
This is a fantastic collection for reading at night during a thunderstorm, on the beach, on your morning bus commute...really anywhere. The brief nature of the stories make it easy to pick it up and put it down whenever you need while still being compelling enough for multiple re-reads. Can't recommend it enough!
